Swatch and Moby unite.
Watchmaker Swatch and musician Moby, formerly known as Richard Melville Hall, may not seem like a match made in design heaven, but their collaboration is creatively cool.
Little Idiot is the name of Swatch’s limited edition collection of watches. It’s inspired by the blue cartoon character (of the same name) that Moby created early on in his career. Now, Little Idiot – who made regular appearances in Moby's music videos – is somewhat of a fashion icon, thanks to its creator and Swatch.
The Little Idiot collection of 7 777 watches includes prints of the hand-drawn character of the same name. It comes in a blue dial with white prints and a dash of yellow, and the strap is solid blue silicone with white prints. The packaging gives the already cool creation a truly memorable appeal, and is made of solid blue plastic.
“I started drawing cartoon characters in the mid 80s when I worked in an underground record store. Every bag that left the store had a drawing on it, and one of my jobs was to draw the cartoons on the bags. Since then, the little cartoon characters have just taken on lives of their own. I have been familiar with Swatch watches for many years and have admired the sense of creativity that they convey and promote. Working with Swatch on this project provided an interesting opportunity to give new context to the Little Idiot drawings and I really love the finished results,” Moby says of his cartoon inspiration.
As an early 80s university student, in his native New York, Hall kept music close to his heart while playing with bands and perfecting his mixing skills as a DJ. By the late 80s, he played at some of New York's best underground house and hip-hop clubs. Go, his debut single, became an international dance anthem. It sold over 20 million copies worldwide, and made Moby a household name. As his career grew so did his reach, and Moby found himself collaborating with his music heroes and emerging artists. With hits such as Lift Me Up and Slipping Away, Moby is also known for his photographic and writing skills.
This new collaboration from Moby and Swatch is a cool way to keep time and make the quirky Little Idiot character part of your wardrobe.
