Dirk de Waal is involved in diverse creative areas encompassing: development, direction and execution of concepts for live events and print media. these include: stage costume design, award ceremonies, product launches & events, fashion shows, commercials and editorial concept development.



It all started off in Hillbrow (the heart of Johannesburg’s inner city) and now the home to africa working on the South African Fashion Awards which won a golden Loerie Award for best event later that year…what followed was the start of a incredible journey: working on more than more than 400 projects across 3 continents while working for Jan Malan/Umzingeli Productions as project manager and show director.



With a huge love for Africa and its possibilities he travelled and worked in more than 12 Sub-Saharan countries. From scouting for MNET Face of Africa, show directing the BBC Radio Africa Awards in Nairobi, workshops for fashion designers in Mozambique to help them develop their brands into businesses, shooting a TV commercial in the Okavango Delta, styling a music video on a remote island off the shore of Zanzibar, to projects for the UN World Food Programme in Lagos and Accra featuring Ozwald Boateng.

He has had the great honor to be involved in a host of high profile fund raising events to promote global AIDS and education awareness such as: Sports for Peace for the UNDP with Secretary-General of the UN Ban Ki-moon, Sir Elton John’s Cape Town Ball, POSI+IVE Rocks for Sun International and the closing Soirée at the World Economic Forum in Davos.

He has managed a host of diverse projects such as a interior project for the Glaceau Vitamin Water store designed by the whatiftheworld team, the MTN Business-Leading CEO Council, the trade launch of Sol Kerzner’s One&Only Hotel in Cape Town for Gavin Rajah Concepts, the International Design Indaba Expo-fashion sector, designer show room for Stiaan Louw Menswear, roadshows for L’Oréal Professionnel, Carducci, Country Road, Woolworths and reality television shows such as Tyra Banks America’s Next Top Model, Heidi Klum’s Germany’s Next Top Model, Dance Africa and Face of Africa.

He has worked with numerous publications such as Cosmopolitain, Destiny, Dossier, ELLE, GQ, Issue One, REAL, Sarie, True Love to name but a few. He has managed and directed product launches, conferences and symposiums for MAC Cosmetics, L’Oréal Professionnel, REDKEN, NIKE-Gallery on 4th, Wonderbra and Cathy Pacific.



He has done fashion and costume design work for Brett Bailey, HAVAIANAS, Kimberley-Clark and has worked on 7 different fashion weeks as far afield as Delhi and Dar es Salaam and doing the creative direction and styling for IDOLS South Africa.
